My name is Derek Dufresne. I have been tattooing since 1999 and have won numerous awards across Canada and the US for my tattoos and artwork. I have had tattoos published and feature stories in dozens of tattoo magazines, newspapers etc worldwide. I have owned tattoo studios in Victoria, BC, Canada and New Orleans, LA and I am now creating custom work at Mind's Eye Tattoo Studio in Tacoma. I specialize in expressive Japanese-inspired tattoos, including dragons, phoenixes, sleeves, and larger pieces, horror themed tattoos, realism while also welcoming walk in flash and coverup ideas. ## FAQ

### How do I choose the right tattoo design?

A strong design usually reflects your personal meaning, visual preferences, and the way you want the tattoo to fit your body. A professional tattoo artist can help refine your ideas into artwork that is clear, balanced, and suitable for tattooing.

### Can a tattoo artist help develop my idea?

Yes, tattoo artists commonly work from conversations, references, and broad concepts rather than finished artwork alone. Their artistic guidance can help shape the composition, details, and placement while keeping the design personal to you.

### What should I consider when choosing tattoo placement?

Placement affects how a tattoo looks with the body's natural shape and how visible it may be in daily life. A professional can discuss proportion, movement, and how the design may work alongside existing or future tattoos.

### What is the difference between custom tattooing and flash designs?

Custom tattooing is developed around an individual's concept, while flash designs are pre-drawn pieces created by the artist for clients to choose from. Both can result in meaningful artwork, and a professional can help determine which approach best suits your goals.

### How can I prepare for a tattoo consultation?

Bring a clear description of your idea along with visual references that communicate the mood, subject, or style you like. It is also helpful to remain open to professional guidance, since tattoo artists can explain how to make the concept work effectively on the body.
